Rico Colorado used to be a booming mining town, which in its heyday had a population of about 3,000 people. Today it is a laid back community with a population of about 300.No longer a rushed municipality Rico is has been discovered as the backcountry lovers paradise. Located in the heart of the beautifully rugged San Juan Mountain range high mountain peaks are in view in every direction.
An easy distance from Rico are the opportunities in the winter to cross country ski, snowshoe, downhill ski, snowboard and snowmobile. In the summer there is mountain biking, fishing, hiking, jeeping, sightseeing and horseback riding. The fall brings out the hunters as the summer activities start to come to an end.
The MineShaft Inn: Motel Rooms Near Telluride, CO
Historically the Mineshaft Inn was a built as a home for one of the very successful retail barons of the mining boom days. When the boom ended the family created a boarding house. Eventually the Rico Argentine mining company used it as it's offices. It has been used in several different capacities, giving it a colorful past. In the 1990s the home was doubled in size and remodeled into a bed and breakfast.Exquisite period chandeliers and stained glass grace this wonderful turn of the century home throughout. There are seven beautifully appointed rooms each with its' own seperate charm. The Inn comes with a
fully equipped kitchen for use by our guests, a sunroom for reading and a beautiful parlour that has large windows with a main street view. We also have a public internet cafe serving espresso and teas. We offer a variety of breakfast and luncheon items baked by the High Desert Bakery in Dolores, CO.
One of our favorite rooms is on the second floor with a seating area in the bay window. It is a great place to watch the people on the street as well as the beautiful sunsets over the mountians. All of the rooms except one have views of a mountain peak or forested mountainous area.
